While play-by-play may be the backbone of any sport-centric broadcast, the most entertaining voice is usually that of the colour commentator. Colour commentary serves as a means to explore and further push storylines, characters, intended fan responses and the wider product as a whole. It’s a fine line to walk, though. Too much nonsense and the viewers switch off, too little nonsense, and the viewers won’t get as invested. To put it bluntly – Colour commentary is there to fill the spaces between the lines and keep us, as a viewership, thoroughly engaged with the product.
